Have any of you much expertise in these lowland Scottish clans? I'm
particularly thinking of the Grahams/Graemes.

Or even Cumbrian clans! :-)

Popular interest in the reivers has been resuscitated in recent years as
local authorities have realised their tourist potential. There used to be,
and probably still is, a good website on them by the Cumbrian tourist
authority, which you can do doubt google.

One way forward would be to look at the Transactions of local historical
societies. There are lots of articles on the Debateable Land and their
inhabitants in the transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland
Archaeological & Antiquarian Society and in the transactions of the
Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society.

'Cumberland Families and Heraldry' has a number of entries on Grahams, as
probably does also its sister volume on Westmorland. Most of these are on
families that are fairly modern in origin - but there are entries on the
Grahams descended from 'Lang Will', banished from Scotland to England c.
1516 and banished from England to Ireland in 1606.

I have no expertise on the Grahams but would imagine that any research on
such a 'clan' would present innumerable difficulties! :-)

Indeed. That's what I'm finding. Looks like I'm descended from these
marauding Grahams, including Lang Will and John of the Bright Sword, but
it's complex. They were dumped from Scotland to England (Cumberland as
you say) then from England to Ireland from whence many of them bounced
back again. (Yup, I've read ElectricScotland, as Alex Findlater
suggests.) They seemed to have bred like rabbits.

If I get desperate, which I probably will, I'll try the Antiquarian Socs
you mention, so thanks.

Just wondered whether anyone here had info on the Grahams.

The Grahams were such a powerhouse in Scottish history (from Robert
Graham who killed King James I to Montrose) that you won't have much
of a problem finding material on them. They were big in the Lennox so
I have an interest in the early ones. On the off side, there is not much in
terms of solid material on the early Grahams (sort of endemic to many
Scottish families).

Best wishes!

For a quick overview look at the article on Electric Scotland. It is
pretty accurate and paints the picture quite well.

Renia, that's a pretty broad request. There are hundreds of Grahams in the Medieval period. Perhaps YOU could share with US exactly which Grahams are the ones you are interested in. The smaller the request, the more likely you will get feedback.
Thanks

Yes, there are and were hundreds of Grahams in all periods. But that's
why my request was broad, initially, to see whether anyone was
interested in them. At the moment, I'm particularly interested in the
descendants of Walter Graham, the head of the Cumberland clan, who was
deported to Ireland in 1605. His ancestors are pretty well documented on
the internet (with variations), with the exception of John Graham (John
of the Bright Sword), who is given as reputed son of Malise, Earl of
Menteith.
