In looking over the TAME ancestry of Audrey Barlow, I found a Twyniho connection I had forgotten about. This led me to build the following outline of the Twynihoe family, which I hope will lead to discussion, correction, and expansion.

The Visitation of Somerset begins the family of Twyniho with two missing generations and then with William Twyniho of Cayford in Somerset, married to the heiress of Codrington.

Hints of these earlier generations comes from two sources. In 1323 (16 Edw. II) a William Twynho filed suit against a Henry Twynho and others for forcible ouster from a house in Bagbury, Somerset.

In 1447, a Bartholomew Twyniho was MP from Melcombe.

The known lineage begins with

1. RICHARD DE COBYNDON, of Cobindon near Bristol.

1.1 JOAN DE COBYNDON, married first to JOHN TWYNIHO; married second to William Prelatte.

William Prelatte was a strong adherent of Richard, Duke of York. He died in 1462 and was buried in the chapel of the Holy Trinity at Cirencester.

(Note that the Visitation of Somerset does not give Joan’s name, and has William rather than John.)

1.1.1 JOHN TWINYHO, of Cirencester; d. 1485; married first to AGNES; married second to Eleanor Taillebois.

1.1.3 WILLIAM TWYNIHO, married to Ankarette/Angharad Hawkeston.

She was a lady in waiting to Isabel Nevill, wife of George, Duke of Clarence, and was accused by him of poisoning his wife. She was seized by men of the duke and after a staged trial in 1477, was executed by hanging.

1.1.3.1.1.1 SYBIL TWYNIHO, married to Stephen Payne of Payne’s Place and Motcombe in Dorsetshire.

(As Stephen and Sybil had heirs, this contradicts the i.p.m. of Roger Twyniho.)

1.1.3.5 WILLIAM TWYNIHO, of More Crichel; died 1497. Married first to Catherine Solers, and second to Margaret Langford, widow of Nicholas Carew and – Carrent.

In Margaret’s will as transcribed, he is called Thomas, but More Crichel is identified correctly. After his death, she became abbess of Shaftesbury in 1496/7, and died 1504 (though the transcription of her will in [15] says 1500).

Margaret’s will mentions a son named William Twyniho. The manor of Evington in Gloucester[shire] passed from the Solers to the William Twyniho who died in 1497, to his son Walter Twyniho, and then to William Twyniho, who, with his son Edmund, sold the property in 1548.

I'm interested in John Twyniho d.1485, the Gloucestershire MP, whose daughter married Thomas Morton just as Twyniho's death. I have been able to find any hints as to how this Dorset man (b.c.1462) came into contact with Twyniho. Perhaps he was training in law under him? No direct evidence. His family had no previous connections with Gloucestershire.

Also curious is why Twyniho had so little property after a lifetime in public service, a host of major appointments, and a successful law practice. Thomas got very little from Dorothy's dower -- can't imagine why.

Any ideas on either of these questions?

One general observation -- Don't trust visitation genealogies too much. They are pointers to possibilities, but it's up to you to verify them. I've found numerous errors on visitations genealogies, some of them egregious. Also, published visitation genealogies often incorporate (without due notice) guesses made by the editor, which could be based on little more than whim. As for Hutchins, always use the third edition, Shipp & Hodson -- they often checked his assertions (including genealogies) against archival documentation and did not hesitate to correct and criticize.

BTW, the History of Parliament Project will eventually come out with a detailed biography of John Twyniho -- they just haven't gotten around to him yet. Those people are painstaking, the most detailed and serious archival scholarship going on today.

Brad Verity demonstrated that the above John Twynho (son of William Twynho and Ankaret Hawkeston) was dead by 1475. His widow Joan then married Thomas Cressett:

"A writ of diem clausit extremum was issued for John Twynyho in October
1475, so he had died not too much prior to that date."
