This is my first post to this group.
I am wondering if it is possible to identify the wife of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Menteith.
What I've read so far is:
"By his countess, whose Christian name was Matilda, but whose surname is unknown, he had four sons."
The Red Book of Menteith, p. 458
"He married a lady named Matilda, whose surname has not been discovered . . ."
The Scots Peerage, Volume VI, p. 134.
In the following article, Ravilious also identifies Alexander’s wife simply as “Matilda”
Ravilious, John P. (2010) “The Earls of Menteith: Alexander, Earl of Meneith, and Sir Alexander Abernethy”, The Scottish Genealogist Vol LVII, No. 3, p. 133.
In a later article Ravilious appears to accept that he married Matilda, a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn.
Ravilious, John P. (2013) “The Earls of Menteith: Murdoch, Earl of Menteith and the Ferrers Family of Groby”, The Scottish Genealogist Vol LX, No. 1, p. 13 (family tree).
However, there is no mention of a daughter Matilda of Robert, Earl of Menteith in The Scots Peerage.
The Scots Peerage, Volume VIII, pp. 244-245.
Barns-Graham records his marriage to Maud/Matilda and states “possibly Matilda de Arnot”
